GS-23. Ship Security Officer

Scope:

This course meets the requirements of knowledge that must have the person to be appointed to the tasks and responsibilities of the ship (SSO) security officer, as it is defined in Rule VI/5, section A‐ VI / 5 , table A‐VI/5 of the STCW/78 as amended, Chapter XI‐2 of SOLAS 1974 as amended and paragraph 2.1.6 and 12 of the ISPS code, part A.

Course Entry Requirements:

The course is open to all active seafarers (or other personnel on board) that have chance to be appointed officers for the protection and security of the ship. There are no specific income requirements, however to obtain the Certificate, the trainee shall have obtained approved seagoing service as per STCW Reg VI/5 as amended.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, trainee should be able to undertake the duties and responsibilities of the SHIP SECURITY OFFICER, as defined in STCW 78, as amended, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Ship security assessments and audits
  • Creating ship security plans
  • Ship and port facility security measures
  • Recognition of behavioral patterns of people likely to threaten security
  • Detection of weapons
  • Testing and calibration of security equipment and systems

Course Structure:

Candidates will use the GIMET e-learning platform to watch a series of video lessons, and to access a broad range of teaching materials. This course is designed and structured in strict accordance with the IMO Model Course 3.19.

Course Assessment and Certification:

At the end of the course the trainee has to pass an online Final Exam, consisting in 20 items of various types. On successful completion of the course, candidate will be awarded an internationally recognized Course Certificate.
