GS-21. Medical First Aid

Scope:

This course is designed in compliance with Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1 and tables A-VI/3 of the STCW Code of the International Convention on standards of training, certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers STCW/78 Code, as amended

Course Entry Requirements:

The course is open to all seafarers, of all ranks, including auxiliary personnel onboard of Ro-Ro and passenger ships and other types of merchant, drilling/offshore or highly specialized ships.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, successful trainee will be able to explain, describe and identify the correct procedure of the following operations:

  • encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a competent person in charge of medical care on board.
  • describing the body structure, in terms of skeleton, joints, muscles and tendons, major organs (brain, heart, lungs, etc.), circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary and nervous systems, as well as stating the functions of the organs and systems of organs forming the human body structure.
  • applying the procedures of basic life support, including resuscitation and respiration, procedures to be applied in case of bleeding, fracture, burns and scalds, etc.
  • describing the ship’s pharmacy, explaining what to do in case of poisoning, how to examine a patient, describing various mental illnesses and applying the practical procedure of requesting a medical advice.

Course Structure:

Candidates will use the GIMET e-learning platform to watch a series of video lessons, and to access a broad range of teaching materials. This course is designed and structured in strict accordance with the IMO Model Course 1.14. When the course is held in a classroom, its duration is 32 hours (4 days). The structure of the course includes:

MODULE 1: Human Anatomy and Physiology

MODULE 2: Basic Life Support

MODULE 3: Traumas

MODULE 4: Medical first aid 

Course Assessment and Certification:

At the end of the course the trainee has to pass a final assessment, consisting in 20 items of various types, which must be answered in 25 minutes. On successful completion of the course, candidate will be awarded an internationally recognized Course Certificate.
