GS-21. Medical First Aid

Scope:

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency, required to demonstrate their competence in providing medical first aid on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/4, paragraphs 1, 2 and 3 of the STCW Code, as amended.

This course is designed in accordance with the IMO Model Course 1.14.

Course Type:

Part 1: Online (100% on GIMET e-learning platform)

Part 2: Practical (4 hours)

Course Entry Requirements:

The course is open to all seafarers, of all ranks, including auxiliary personnel onboard of Ro-Ro and passenger ships and other types of merchant, drilling/offshore or highly specialized ships.

It is recommended that all prospective trainees have completed the course Elementary First Aid, or any other similar training, prior to attending the Medical First Aid course

Course Objective:

At the end of the course, trainees should be able to apply immediate medical first aid in the event of an accident or illness onboard ship

Course Structure:

Candidates will use the GIMET e-learning platform to watch a series of video lessons, and to access a broad range of teaching materials. This course is designed and structured in strict accordance with the IMO Model Course 1.14. When the course is held in a classroom, its duration is 32 hours (4 days). The structure of the course includes:

MODULE 1: First Aid

MODULE 2: Immediate Life Support

MODULE 3: Medical Care

Course Assessment and Certification:

At the end of the course the trainee has to pass a final assessment, consisting in 20 items of various types, which must be answered in 25 minutes. On successful completion of the course, candidate will be awarded an internationally recognized Course Certificate.
