GS-03. Specialized Training for Personnel Onboard RO-RO and Passenger Ships

IMPORTANT NOTE: Starting 20.04.2022 an ADDENDUM was introduced in the course’s content, in order to cover the provisions of MSC.417(97). Seafarers that graduated this course prior 20.04.2022 are required to download and assume the Addendum, thank you for your understanding and support!

AIM:

This course aims to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding to seafarers of all ranks necessary to exercise their service on board RO-RO and Passenger Ships, in accordance with the provisions of the Regulation V/2 of the STCW Convention and table A-V/2 of the STCW Code, as amended.

The course also aims to familiarize students with the procedures and equipment of the ship which, combined with regular and realistic on-board training and drills, will help them to react calmly and effectively in a real situation where the safety of the ship is threatened, of passengers or transport units (vehicles, wagons, etc.).

ENTRY STANDARDS:

Seafarers of any rank aiming to work onboard RO-Ro and/or Passenger ships.

DURATION:

4 days (32 hours)

METHOD OF DELIVERY:

The course consists of a series of classroom lectures and educational movies. Lecture sessions are conducted by a GIMET instructor in a classroom. Alternatively, students may access the course online, on Gimet e-learning platform.

ASSESSMENT:

A final assessment is scheduled at the end of day 4 of the course, covering the course’s curricula.

CERTIFICATE:

Trainees that successfully complete this course are awarded an internationally recognized course certificate.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course, trainees should be able to:

1. contribute to the implementation of on-board emergency plans and procedures, to call and evacuate passengers;

2. assist passengers on the way to assembly and boarding places;

3. establish and maintain effective communication with the crew and passengers during an emergency;

4. demonstrate to passengers the use of individual rescue equipment;

5. embark / disembark passengers, paying special attention to people with disabilities and people who need assistance in emergency situations;

6. organize the emergency procedures on board the ship;

7. control the reaction of passengers in emergency situations;

8. coordinate the loading / unloading operations of the vehicles;

9. apply special measures, procedures and requirements for the transport of dangerous goods on board ROPAX vessels;

10. apply the requirements of the Code of Safety Practices on Stacking and Mooring of Goods;

11. analyze the stability and trim of the ship before and after the damage;

12. monitor the operations of opening / closing and securing portholes and ramps;

13. monitor the atmosphere in the compartments intended for vehicles.

The program aims to familiarize students with the procedures and equipment of the ship which, combined with regular and realistic on-board training and drills, will help them to react calmly and effectively in a real situation where the safety of the ship is threatened, of passengers or transport units (vehicles, wagons, etc.).

INSTRUCTOR:

Master Mariner with relevant experience in the biggest European simulation training center.

COURSE STRUCTURE:

Day 1 (8 hrs): Familiarization with onboard emergency situations. Safety instructions for personnel providing direct services to passengers in the passengers’ spaces.

Day 2 (8 hrs): Crowd management

Day 3 (8 hrs): Crisis management and human behaviuour

Day 4 (8 hrs): Safety of passengers, goods and hull integrity
